The shows many plotlines can be divided up into distinct storylines. The purpose of this page is to sum up, as concisely as possible, each of these major storylines. Due to the show’s nature as a soap opera, continuing storylines would often overlap with each other, others would run concurrently but would largely be unconnected, such as the first ‘Barnabas Collins’ storyline and the ‘Jason McGuire’ storyline.

It is not always clear when a storyline has formally finished. For example, the initial ‘Victoria Winters’ storyline ends at an arbitrary point with episode 127 as from then on the main focus of the show moves away from the Victoria Winters character to more supernatural based storylines and characters. Another example is the ‘1795‘ storyline, although the narrative leaves the year 1795 with episode 460, the next couple of episodes after that, up to 466, are directly about the time Victoria Winters spent in 1795, so therefore are included as part of the ‘1795’ storyline.

The episode count tally takes into account of 20 pre-empted episodes that occurred thoughtout the shows run. Episodes were numbered regardless of whether or not the show was pre-empted. So, there are a total of 20 "numbered" episodes that do not, in actuality, exist. For example the initial ‘Victoria Winters’ storyline is 125 episodes to take into account 2 pre-emptions that occurred during this time.
