Saint Croix Island was the first French settlement in Maine. In 1604, the first Christmas tree in the United States was here (23). The French left the settlement in 1607, at which time the English settled Fort St. George at the mouth of the Kennebec River (25).

Note that Victoria Winters' account of these events in 25 is very disjointed.
