Reverend Brand was the minister who performed the wedding ceremony for Carolyn Stoddard and Jeb Hawkes.
Elizabeth Collins Stoddard mentions that the Reverend Brand will be going from the ceremony to a "vestry meeting." Since the only major denomination in the United States in 1970 that used the word "vestry" to refer to its governing board was the Episcopal Church, it is likely that the Reverend Brand is supposed to be an Episcopal priest.
