Mr Best was a pseudonym used by Death. He controlled the realm known as the "Stopping Off Place" a hotel lobby where deceased souls passed through. Best first appeared to Amanda Harris in 1897, and stopped her attempted suicide. Best was mysterious yet charming. Most who met him were not afraid of him.
He has an unusual fondness for Amanda, and offered her two chances to be reunited with her true love, Quentin Collins. Amanda failed at both attempts, and was finally taken away.
Best also offered Quentin a chance to be with her for all eternity. He said that Amanda would be his if they can escape the land of the dead without touching each other, but they both failed.
