He did not believe in witchcraft and believed the prosecution in the witchcraft trial of [[Victoria Winters]], one [[Reverend Trask]], to be "a common charlatan." As such, he was interested in defending Victoria in order to expose Trask. However, believing Judge Matigan should know the whole truth in order to defend her properly, Victoria told him of her arrival from [[1968]], prompting Judge Matigan to withdraw from the defense case believing Victoria to be mentally unstable ([[404]]).

Judge Matigan (played by Addison Powell) was a lawyer in 1795.
