Denise Marie Nickerson (April 1, 1957 - July 10, 2019) joined Dark Shadows in November 1968 playing Amy Jennings, the tragic, yet perky sister of twins Tom (vampire) and Chris Jennings (werewolf). She went on to play Nora Collins and Amy Collins.
Nickerson is probably best known for her role as Violet Beauregarde in the 1971 classic, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and as a member of "The Short Circus" in the educational television series, The Electric Company.
Denise "retired" from acting in 1993 and worked for a while as an accountant. She was a longtime attendee at Dark Shadows fan conventions.
She returned to the world of Dark Shadows playing the role of Elspeth Gardner in the Big Finish audio dramas Carriage of the Damned and The Darkest Shadow.
Illness and death[]
In June 2018, Nickerson had a severe stroke and was hospitalized in an intensive care unit. She was discharged to a rehabilitation center in July. In August, Nickerson returned home to recover under her family's care.[1]
On July 8, 2019, Nickerson accesed her various medications while her son and daughter-in-law were out of the house. After consuming much, her son took her to an emergency room where she was admitted to an intensive care unit in respiratory distress, where she developed pneumonia.[2] On July 9, Nickerson suffered a massive seizure while in the hospital. This, combined with the effects of the pneumonia, caused her to go into a coma-like state. On July 10, 2019 Nickerson's family made the decision to remove her from life support.[3][4] She died later that day at the age of 62.[5]
