Dana Elcar (October 10, 1927 – June 6, 2005) played the part of Sheriff George Patterson on the original Dark Shadows. Elcar was born Ibson Dana Elcar in Ferndale, Michigan, the son of Danish immigrants, (something he had in common with his DS costar Alexandra Moltke). He attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and enjoyed a long and succesful career in television, becoming well-known for his role on the cult TV series MacGyver (1985-1992). Although he lost his vision in 1991 due to glaucoma, the dedicated actor didn't let his affliction hinder his performances - he continued to act into the 21st century. He famously observed, "The fact that you are losing your eyesight does not mean you have forgotten how to act." Elcar's vision problems were written into MacGyver, with his character given the same affliction. His last performance was as a blind man on the show E.R.
Dana Elcar was married three times and fathered 4 children. He died in 2005 from complications due to pneumonia.
