Barnabas continues to see Parallel Time while a stymied Roger is distracted from his concerns about Carolyn's marriage to Jeb by Megan Todd.

Synopsis

A strange night of mystery on the great estate of Collinwood, for Barnabas Collins searching the long deserted East Wing, has made an astonishing and puzzling discovery: a room, brilliantly furnished, but a room which he cannot enter, stopped by some invisible force - and a room in which he saw Julia and Elizabeth, obviously living different lives. They could not hear him when he called to them. Then the door closed, and he managed to open it again, the room was empty, the furnishings gone.

Barnabas recounts his East Wing experience word-for-word for Julia; Liz enters and talks more about decorating

Roger comes home in a snit about Carolyn’s marriage; when he left, everything seemed normal, and he can’t believe Liz isn’t trying to annul the marriage. He dislikes her defense that her own marriage was to the disapproved sort; later, Julia and Barnabas investigate the mysterious East Wing room, which is empty. Julia is afraid of Barnabas’ being in the room by himself, but later joins him. They are startled by a shutter; Julia muses about the lives lived in this room, and Barnabas reminds her that the clothes and look of the mystery room were modern. She vaguely remembers a conversation with Stokes about Parallel Time, and elaborates on the concept by illustrating how her own life would be different had she not gone to medical school. A noise frightens them, and they find Megan cowering in the East Wing; they bring her to the mystery room, about which Megan is clueless. Megan has forgotten her old existence in favour of her new, much more pleasurable one and she refuses to undergo the duo's offer of injections; Megan vanishes while Barnabas laments.

At the Old House, Roger is brutish to Willie while looking for Barnabas, and while returning to Collinwood gets bitten by his consolee Megan Todd. Julia is trying to console Barnabas when Roger returns, weary and photophobic. He mentions running into Megan Todd, distressing the dynamic duo. Barnabas resolves to stake Megan and orders poor Willie to stake her. Willie is worried about his future wife’s happiness; Julia dangles a cross in front of Barnabas when he worries about her safety in her mission with Megan. Barnabas worries; Julia asks Liz about the East Wing, which she says is cleaned every spring and has no legends associated with it. Julia claims to have seen a light in it and is afraid the children will think it’s haunted.

In the East Wing, Barnabas again sees the room as it is changed. Liz-PT and Julia-PT are again arguing, this time about a covered portrait which Liz wants removed but Julia wants Uncovered. Julia wins out, and Barnabas is shocked—the portrait is of Angélique!!! Again Barnabas is left out of the Room, wishing he could enter it.

Memorable quotes

  • Julia: We live in this universe in 1970, right? We accept the fact that our time is the only time that we can truly know. Suppose time is like a road and parallel to it there's another road: on one we live the lives we know, but on the other road our lives are different because we're in a different time band and we've made different choices.
  • Megan Todd: I don't want to be any different from what I am now... You just don't know, I won't let you change me.
  • Willie Loomis: Mr. Collins, Barnabas don't confide in me.
  • Roger Collins: Well that's certainly understandable... Delight in your ignorance, Loomis. Delight in your ignorance.
  • Willie Loomis: Boy, you sure don't improve in time, Mr. Collins.
  • Willie: Why are you picking on me, Barnabas?
  • Barnabas: I'm not picking on you.
  • Willie: Oh yes you are! I'm not going up to some old room in the east wing and open up some coffin and put a stake on a heart... Barnabas, I don't even know Megan Todd!
  • Barnabas: Willie, you're not listening to me.
  • Willie: That's because you're gonna talk me into it!

Background information and notes

Continuity and mistakes

  • The tag is consecutive with the last episode, probably in the wee hours of the morning (estimated Feb 16). Roger's return and subsequent scenes must take place the SAME day after dusk (still Feb 16).
  • When Roger confronts Willie at the Old House, Louis Edmonds clearly waits for Marie Wallace's closeup to end before he says his next line. An off-camera voice can be heard giving him a cue.
  • The opening narration shows the room in Parallel Time with Angelique's portrait uncovered, however it is still covered when Barnabas happens upon it at the end of the episode.
