Count Petofi promises to save Jamison if Barnabas will tell him how he is able to transcend time.

Synopsis[]

A stormy night in the year 1897, a terrifying night in which two lives seem about to end.

Count Petofi emerges from the next room with his hand attached to his body. He tells Barnabas that he will not cure Quentin and Jamison. The Count takes Barnabas's power to disappear away from him.

Quentin appears and tells Barnabas that Jamison is still sick. Petofi causes Barnabas to have a vision, in which he sees David Collins calling for Quentin, and Julia trying to calm him by giving him an injection. Barnabas realizes that Petofi does not have access to the vision he caused Barnabas to have. He tells Barnabas unless he takes him to 1969 Petofi will not lift the curse.

Petofi then appears at the Old House to talk to Magda. Magda takes Petofi and Aristede to Barnabas's coffin. They chain the coffin and secure it with a cross.

Memorable quotes[]

Petofi (regarding Barnabas): Not an ideal companion for such an exhilarating occasion. Champagne, Aristede! We will drink champagne, and we will ignore him.

Petofi: Look into that cupboard, Mr. Collins! What do you see?
Barnabas: I see the inside of the cupboard.

Magda: How...how did you get in here?
Petofi: Aristede is very clever. He adores secret tunnels. He has the instincts of a mole, I think.

Barnabas (after Petofi has asked Barnabas to take him to 1969): Count Petofi, do you think that this is some sort of a carriage ride?

Background information and notes[]

Story[]

Bloopers and continuity errors[]

  • At the beginning of the scene after the title credits, Michael Stroka looks to the side at the teleprompter and/or for his cue before Aristede approaches Petofi and says, "Master, I don't understand."
  • When Barnabas says, "I know the reason why you refuse to cure Quentin and Jamison" to Petofi, Jonathan Frid pauses in mid-sentence and looks at the teleprompter.
  • When Barnabas tells Petofi that Aristede made the bargain for getting the hand back, he includes restoration of Edward and other members of the Collins family to their normal states, which he had not discussed with Aristede.
  • The shadow of the camera can be seen as it zooms in to a close-up of Jamison after Quentin leaves the cottage.
  • Before Quentin arrives at Petofi's lair in the mill, you can hear David Selby's footsteps as he arrives at the set and steps into position at the top of the staircase. As Barnabas steps forward and says “I have made the greatest mistake of my life,” you can see Quentin’s shadow moving around on Petofi’s head. Ten seconds later, they play the door opening sound effect, and Quentin walks down the stairs and enters the scene.
  • Magda is wearing the same makeup as Julia. The heavy blue eye shadow is a dead giveaway.
  • Jonathan Frid flubs his lines: Barnabas tells Petofi, “But I cannot take you back there! I don’t even know how to get there myself! I...my reason here was... was vital.” A moment later, he says, “I don’t understand the powers that I have to get here.”
  • After Barnabas leaves, when Petofi sets his glass down, he hits items on the table. They can't be seen, but there is clanging noise.
  • Petofi says that the Collins Family History Book was published in 1969, but when he and Aristede found it at the Old House, they looked in it and said it was published in 1965.
  • Why does Petofi assume that he would be safe from the gypsies in the future? There's no reason why the Romano tribe wouldn't still exist in 1969 and wouldn't still be looking for him; they've lasted this long. [Addendum: Petofi does not say he would be safe from the gypsies in the future. What he says is that he would have 80 years of rest before the gypsies caught up with him, so he obviously knows he could be found in 1969. What's puzzling, though, is how he would have 80 years of "rest" if he somehow transported directly to 1969.]
  • After Aristede closes Barnabas's coffin, the rope connecting the lid and the body of the coffin is sticking out.
  • The final dramatic sting comes in too early, before Petofi finishes saying his last line. Then the same music cue repeats again, too late this time, past the final fade-out.
