Mrs. Johnson walks in while Joe is trying to kill Barnabas.

Synopsis[]

The great estate of Collinwood has seen many secrets, secrets which have led to horror, to violence, even to death. And in the Old House on the grounds, another secret is working its spell, for two men bear the mark of the vampire, and one insane with jealousy and suspicion is taking his revenge.

Mrs. Johnson walks in while Joe is trying to kill Barnabas; Joe runs off. Elizabeth and Roger find Joe in the Collins mausoleum and bring him back to Collinwood. Joe admits that he tried to kill Barnabas and says he will try again. Roger calls the police.

Memorable quotes[]

Joe: (about Barnabas) No one knows what he's really like!

Roger: So many, many things have gone on in this house; so many strange things have been attributed to the Collins family.

Elizabeth: There are spirits here, watching us, envying us . . . because they want to live. They hate us because we are alive.

Mrs. Johnson: I just can't figure out people anymore. It's as though everyone has lost control of his senses, even a sane man like Mr. Barnabas.

Mrs. Johnson: Everyone tells me the sensible thing to do is the crazy thing to do.

Dramatis personae[]

Background information and notes[]

Production[]

  • First aired on Halloween of 1968. This is the third episode of the series to air on Halloween day (after 91 and 352.) 875 will be the next and final episode to air on October 31.

Story[]

Bloopers and continuity errors[]

  • Roger says that "everything always seems more civilized over a cup of tea," yet in episode 178, he said, "Tea isn't a drink; it's a liquid."
  • At one point when Roger and Elizabeth are discussing Liz's fear of being buried alive, the camera moves up and down on a close-up of Liz.
  • When Joe holds a small tree in the woods, it moves back and forth.
  • When Elizabeth and Roger are in Eagle Hill Cemetery to see the Collins mausoleum, the establishing shot suggested sunset and the set was dark as night (even though day birds were chirping in the background). The next establishing shot of Collinwood is as bright as day (and Mrs. Johnson is just coming back from the Old House, so not a lot of time has passed). Then when Roger and Liz bring Joe into Collinwood, it is dark outside the doors.
  • A shadow and hand briefly come in from the right side of the screen during the credits.
