The bleeder valve is found to be missing when Elizabeth and Victoria go to retrieve it from Victoria's room.

Synopsis[]

My name is Victoria Winters. I have come to Collinwood to unlock the echoes of my past. But the tensions of the present seem almost to obscure my search. Tensions that fill the dark corridors, that wait in musty corners, and murmur behind the doors of unused rooms.

Victoria asks David why he attempted to murder Roger and shows him the bleeder valve. The boy tries to get it back from her, but she locks it in a drawer. Victoria tricks him into leaving her room. They wait each other out on opposite sides of Victoria's locked door.

When he learns no arrest has been made, Roger confronts the Sheriff and implies that the lawman is afraid of the now-rich Burke Devlin. He also threatens to use the Collins influence to take Carter's job. The scrupulous officer replies that if Roger wants him to manufacture evidence, maybe he better find another man. Roger demands a search of Burke's hotel room; Carter says only "a fool or a psychotic" would keep the bleeder valve, noting that he thinks Devlin is neither.

David tries to run outside, telling Elizabeth "he has to get away." He also accuses Victoria of trying to hurt him. David says that Victoria is going to make up stories about him and even says that Victoria will try to blame him for Roger's accident. David is ejected from the room and tells Victoria his aunt won't believe her.

Carter has obtained his search warrant but hasn't finished his sandwich. Roger attempts to join Carter on the search, and that's where Jonas finally draws the line, promptly sending Roger on his way. When he's gone, the Sheriff is on the phone with Deputy Harry Shaw regarding Devlin. He instructs his subordinate to "give him another nudge."

Back upstairs at Collinwood, David attempts to eavesdrop on Victoria and Elizabeth's conversation, where she recounts recent events. Victoria tells her that she didn't try to hurt David, he tried to hurt her. Victoria also confesses she was afraid of David. Elizabeth says Burke caused the accident, and doesn't believe Victoria’s story of finding the bleeder valve, which is now gone.

Memorable quotes[]

Roger (to Sheriff Carter trying to eat): Do you think you could forget your stomach for one minute?

Carter (in retort to Roger): Sure, I'm just a small town sheriff. We don't get many murders or attempted murders around here, but you go back to that family of yours, back to your fishing fleet and canneries, and spread the word. Whatever crimes we do get are gonna be handled according to the law.

Dramatis personae[]

Background information and notes[]

Production[]

  • Despite being referred to as the sheriff from now on, Michael Currie's character is still called "Constable Carter" in the closing credits. His credit is changed to "Sheriff Carter" in 28.

Story[]

  • Sheriff Carter gets a call from Mrs. Turner about a lost dog.
  • Elizabeth has known Carter's father for a long time.

Bloopers and continuity errors[]

  • Roger's striped shirt causes the camera to strobe on close-up shots.
  • Michael Currie trips over saying Burke's last name when he's calling Harry. "...The one on Burke Devin-Devlin,"
  • Alexandra Moltke stumbles over a line when she is telling Liz about finding the bleeder valve in David's dresser drawer: "All it need...all it needs to take..."
  • When Joan Bennett answers the phone, she says, "Hello Rog...". She then pauses because she should not have known it was Roger calling until he identified himself (there was no caller ID in 1966).
  • Actress Alexandra Moltke almost trips as she follows Elizabeth up the staircase in the foyer.
