Burke persuades Sam to accept a commission to paint his portrait. Roger is angry that Carolyn doubts Burke's guilt.
Synopsis[]
- My name is Victoria Winters. I am more certain than ever that somehow, the mystery of my past is entwined with the mystery of Collinwood itself, a mystery that echoes throughout all of Collinsport, reaching out to others as well, people who are searching for answers of their own.
Teaser
Burke Devlin stops by the Evans cottage looking for Sam, but only Maggie is home. She asks him in to wait for her father, who should be home at any time. They talk a bit about Roger's accident, and Burke mentions it wasn't an accident at all, but attempted murder. A shocked Maggie drops her coffee cup.
Act I
Maggie and Burke continue chatting, though Maggie is uncomfortable and defensive about her Pop.
At the Collinsport Inn Diner, Sam runs into Roger and invites himself to sit at his table, though Roger says he'd rather Sam stay away. Sam asks Roger about his meeting with Burke last night. Sam asks if Burke had anything to do with his accident last night. He mentions that the two of them are in this together whether they like it or not.
Act II
Roger says he confronted Burke but Burke denied he was involved. Roger was going to make a deal with Burke...he leave town and Roger would forget the whole thing. But now Roger wants to see Burke back in jail. Roger mentions to Sam that the two of them are the only ones who really know what happened 10 years ago.
Sam eventually returns to the cottage, and is surprised to see Burke there talking to Maggie.
Act III
Sam is upset Maggie let Burke in, accusing Burke of wanting to pry into his life. But Burke says he is really interested in hiring Sam to paint his portrait. At first Sam refuses, but Maggie urges him to do it, as they need the money. Burke says he wants a portrait that can fit over a mantle, like the mantle at Collinwood.
Roger returns to Collinwood and meets Carolyn who is glad to see he is not badly hurt. Roger mentions the constable is on his way over, and he intends to see Burke arrested, indicted, tried and convicted.
Act IV
Carolyn expresses doubt about Burke's guilt. But her doubt is based on the fact that she was the one who brought him to Collinwood. If he is really guilty, she is at fault. But Roger assures her no one blames her. Roger promises when he talks to the constable, he will be fair; that he is not a monster.
At the Evans cottage, Sam starts sketching for Burke's portrait. He asks Burke about timing, as Burke said he was only going to be in town for a couple of days. But Burke states he has changed his plans.
Memorable quotes[]
- Carolyn: Are you really going to have Burke Devlin arrested?
- Roger: Not only arrested, but indicted, tried, and convicted. What do you think of that?

Background information and notes[]
Production[]
- Final appearance of actor Mark Allen. He will be replaced in the role of Sam Evans by David Ford in 35.
- This is the first time the phone booth at the Collinsport Inn is seen in the diner.
- Sound effect: When Burke stops in at the Evans cottage to visit, he uses the doorbell. This is one of three episodes during the first year when a doorbell is heard in Collinsport rather than a knock at the door, all when Burke shows up at the Evans cottage (7, 49). Also, there are double screen doors opening onto the main door of the cottage, which disappear in later episodes.
- First appearance of the portrait of Sam's wife.
- First appearance of Susie the waitress (as a nonspeaking role, she's often referred to as 'Silent Susie'). The character is played in this episode by Colleen Kelly.
Story[]
- Burke Devlin's offer of $1000.00 to Sam for painting his portrait would be the equivalent of $9,063.17 in 2023 when adjusted for inflation.
Bloopers and continuity errors[]
- The first few seconds are out of focus.
- In the first scene, when Maggie is drinking her coffee while reading a newspaper, there is clearly nothing in her cup when she stands up. (The practical 'backstage' explanation might be that since the actress has to drop the cup later in the scene, it makes less of a mess for the stage hands to mop up. When she later brings coffee for Burke and herself the cups do contain coffee.)
- Maggie mentions that she was reading the account of Roger's accident of the night before in the newspaper; in episode 7, it was mentioned that the Collinsport Star is a weekly publication, and in episode 20, the day of the accident, Maggie brought Burke the latest copy of the newspaper.
- After Burke and Maggie discuss Sam's painting jobs at the Evan's cottage loud offstage noises can be heard (and a "shhh.") Later when Maggie brings him fresh coffee in front of the portrait someone offstage coughs and a door can be heard closing.
- When Burke and Maggie are looking at the portrait of Maggie's mother, a shadow of a person or a camera moves behind Maggie.
- When Burke is asking Sam to do his portrait and says he wants one like the portraits in Collinwood, he says "the Collin house."
- When the doctor put Roger's arm in a sling on the night of the crash, he said to wear it for a day or two. This episode takes place the next morning, and Roger is already taking off the sling.
- The portrait of Isaac Collins is hanging in a different spot at Collinwood in this episode.
- When Burke is about to leave the Evans cottage, Sam calls Collinsport "Collinport."
