Melanie learns the truth about her parentage despite the best efforts of Julia.

Synopsis

Teaser

Collinwood in 1841. In the Old House, Bramwell waits by Daphne's bedside, hoping his prayers are strong enough to pull her back from the brink of darkness. At Collinwood, Melanie learns that Kendrick has tracked down the truth about her, and soon the secret that eluded her all of her life will be secret no more, and Melanie will know not only who she is, but what incredible ties link her to Collinwood.

Melanie answers Kendricks knock on her door. He tells her that not only does he know who her mother is, but that he has spoken to her and she will be there shortly. As they embrace, there is a knock on the door. Kendrick opens the door and Melanie looks at her mother with recognition and delight.

Act I

Melanie’s mother is Josette duPrés Collins, who used to talk to her when she was a little girl. They embrace and Kendrick leaves them alone. Melanie tells Josette how delighted she is that Josette is her mother, but wants to know why Josette didn’t keep her. Julia eavesdrops as Josette tells her she had no choice, then enters the room demanding that Josette not tell her any more. Josette says she will no longer deny that Melanie is her daughter, and she regrets not having taken her and Bramwell away to Boston when she had a chance many years ago. Julia interjects that Josette was persuaded that in her penniless state she could not raise two children. Josette agrees, and says she gave Melanie to the family to be raised in the Great House, but not as her child. Julia begs Josette not to tell any more of the story, for it would destroy the family and help no one, but Josette will not be dissuaded. Julia tried to lay a guilt trip on Josette, but Melanie throws a fit and kicks Julia out of her room. A defeated Julia leaves.

Alone at last, Melanie asks Josette why she came back to Collinwood and who it was that wanted her to be raised in the Great House. Josette explains it was her father ... Justin Collins.

Act II

Josette is also somehow ignoble; she refused to allow Justin to leave Flora for her. Julia rags on Kendrick for his “meddling” (after all that’s the purpose to which she’s devoted HER life) and wants to know what he plans to do with the information.

Daphne begins a recovery and tells Bramwell she dreamed she had his son. Bramwell is upset at this (remember Catherine’s knocked-up by him). Melanie (who was apparently close to Bramwell growing up) and Josette want to tell the world, but Julia (who feels obligated to fulfill her spinster life by protecting Justin’s memory) points out how it would hurt Flora.

Melanie agrees to keep the secret; Julia orders Josette away from Collinwood forever. Josette goes back to The Old House, where Bramwell mopes; later, he goes to Collinwood to confront Julia. Josette shows up to say Daphne’s turned for the worse. Daphne tells Bramwell to love again, to love Catherine, with her blessing before she dies.

Mistakes

Unless Melanie is to be believed as a 10-year-old (and what a sick couple she and Kendrick would make were that so!), this must be a separate timeline (or, that is, must be accepted retroactively by fans as a separate timeline) than the one leading up to 1970PT as Barnabas is stated to have died in 1830 (Episode 972). Of course, there are also the facts of Bramwell as a poor relation, not the heir to the Collins land and money, and the missing sons....
Another possible explanation, retroactively of course, although it doesn't explain Melanie's age, is that Will's History was wrong, and Quentin, Morgan, Gabriel, and Bramwell were all thought to be Barnabas' sons by the descendants of Bramwell and Catherine.
In short, it seems easiest to accept this timeline as a second alternate timeband. Template:Ep-nav
