Responding to Victoria's story, Burke Devlin shows her the report his detective finished, but it reveals nothing she does not know already.

Synopsis[]

My name is Victoria Winters. I began my search in Collinwood. There in the great mansion on Widows' Hill, surrounded by the ghosts of the past, I'd hoped to unlock the secrets of my beginning. But the key has not yet been found and the search goes on, carrying me to a meeting with a man I wasn't sure I could trust.

Burke tries to get Victoria to eat with him at the Blue Whale, but Victoria seems primarily interested in the report the private detective wrote about her. They go to Burke's hotel room. He orders room service for two.

Joe Haskell apologizes to Carolyn Stoddard and she forgives him. Carolyn refers to the painting of Jeremiah Collins over the fireplace as her great-grandfather, a drunk. Carolyn wants Joe to apologize to Burke as well. She tells him Roger's car crash was an accident. Despite her vouching for Burke, Joe still doesn't like or trust him and the couple agree to "leave it at that."

Victoria learns nothing new from Wilbur Strake's report. She suspects Burke's offer to help her is really an offer to hurt the Collins family. Burke makes a pass at Victoria. She recounts her story about being a foundling. The sound of knocking interrupts their coversation. Burke sends Vicki in the back to wash up while he answers the door. He was expecting a couple of steaks but instead it's Joe Haskell.

Joe tries to repay Burke for covering his bar tab. Burke is cordial about it, but Joe insists because he doesn't want Devlin paying for his drinks. A woman's purse catches his attention. Moments later, Victoria emerges from the rear of the suite before Joe can leave. At Burke's prompting, Joe firmly presses into Burke's hand "Eight dollars. Plus tip."

After seeing Joe, Victoria doesn't want to stay any longer. She reiterates to Burke that she doesn't want to get involved in his quarrel with the Collinses. Before parting for the evening Victoria says yes to Burke asking for a rain check on their dinner date.

Memorable quotes[]

Carolyn: Oh, I thought you were gonna pull the "Where am I?" bit.
Joe: Hey, I know where I am, what I don't know is how I got here.
Carolyn (teasing, waving her hand): You floated.
Joe: Oh come on, Carolyn. How long have I been here?
Carolyn: Hour and a half. Not counting falling down time.

Burke: (to Victoria) What you've seen is just a ripple. You haven't touched the whirlpool, but it is there.

Dramatis personae[]

Background information and notes[]

Production[]

Story[]

  • From age of two to sixteen, Victoria received $50 from "someone" each and every month. Adjusted for inflation, this would be $452.71/month in 2023 dollars.
  • Joe's bar tab of $8.00 would come out to $72.51 in 2023 when adjusted for inflation.

Bloopers and continuity errors[]

  • Carolyn states that Jeremiah Collins is her great-grandfather, although her mother said that he was her great-grandfather in episode 2. Both of these facts will be contradicted later on in the series in which it is established the current Collins family is descended from Daniel Collins, Jeremiah's cousin.
  • Alexandra Moltke flubs the end of her line "...until I was sixteen."
